Squirrel Removal and Drip Edge Exclusion – Markham

Job Overview

Location: Markham, Ontario
Structure: Detached split-level home with attached garage
Problem: Wildlife activity reported in attic, initially believed to be raccoon
Service: Squirrel removal and roofline exclusion
Visits: 2

Summary

Our team responded to reports of attic noise at a detached split-level home in Markham. An exterior inspection confirmed squirrel activity entering through open drip edge sections at two roof levels. Humane one-way doors were installed, followed by full drip edge exclusion. A return visit confirmed successful removal and no further activity.

Background / Property Context

The home featured multiple roof elevations with standard asphalt shingles and aluminum drip edge. The design included exposed transitions where the roofline met the fascia, creating potential wildlife access points. Surrounding mature trees provided easy roof access for climbing animals.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported ongoing noise in the attic space and believed a raccoon was present. Activity was described as consistent movement, primarily during daytime hours.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial exterior roof inspection, our technician identified two separate entry points along the drip edge at different roof levels. The openings were narrow and showed signs consistent with squirrel use rather than raccoon entry. Active squirrel presence was confirmed at both locations.

Photos from the inspection show open drip edge gaps along the roofline, as well as one-way doors later installed over these areas. Additional images show roof penetrations and vents inspected to rule out secondary entry points.

Cause Analysis

Open or unsealed drip edge sections can create concealed access points into attic spaces. Squirrels are able to exploit small gaps along rooflines, particularly where multiple roof levels intersect. Proximity to trees increased roof access and repeated use of these openings.

Treatment / Removal

The removal process was completed using humane, non-lethal methods. Two squirrel one-way doors were installed, each positioned over an active drip edge entry point at separate roof elevations. This allowed squirrels to exit the attic while preventing re-entry.

Exclusion & Repairs

Approximately six feet of drip edge exclusion was installed across the two affected roof sections. Galvanized steel mesh was secured and sealed behind the drip edge to close off existing gaps while maintaining proper roofline function. All work was completed from the exterior without entering the attic space.

Outcome & Confirmation

At the follow-up visit, the homeowner reported no further wildlife activity. The one-way doors were removed, the sealed areas were permanently closed, and all exclusion work was inspected. No additional entry points or signs of squirrel activity were observed.

Technician Notes

Blerti completed both visits, confirming species identification, overseeing humane removal, and ensuring exclusion integrity. Final inspection verified that the roofline was fully secured and no further wildlife issues were present at the time of service completion.
