Types of Rats

roof rat vs norway rat control markham

Norway Rats

Scientifically known as Rattus Norvegicus. The fur of the Noway rat is brown or gray. The length can reach up to 40cm with a tail spanning about 21cm in length. Norway rats prefer attics, basements, underground spaces, and spaces that are generally secluded areas and will not come out unless disturbed. They become sexually mature just after a few months old. The females can give birth to three to twelve litters each years adding up to four to twenty-two young per litter. Norway rats typically dig burrows close to the foundation of your house that can consist of multiple chambers. Random holes might appear in the yard that serve as entry-and exit points. These rats are usually a menace to your yard as they usually eat from the crops. Since these rats usually stay low to the ground, they often enter left-open garage doors where they can house themselves for extended period of times. The Norway Rat can do a lot of damage to the interior of the space it enters since it has a habit of chewing and gnawing on random objects throughout the space in order to keep their teeth in check. They can gnaw on different materials from aluminum, to copper, and even concrete to keep their teeth the desired length. This can have dangerous consequences as rats are not aware of the dangers associated gnawing on electrical wiring which can lead to a fuse. When the rat does gnaw on the wiring, it has change of being electrocuted which leaves a horrible stench in the garage that can spread through the house in no time. Rats can survive from eating on several things as their diet is not that particular. Norway Rats can eat small insects, trash, and can eat from vegetables it finds in the yard making it harder to get rid of it in a timely manner.

Roof Rats

Scientifically known as Rattus rattus, this rat is generally smaller in size than the Norway rat. They normally are black or brown and have large beady eyes. Its tail is no longer than the body. They are great at climbing and for this reason, they often break into attics or other parts of the property that are elevated. They mainly eat fruits, seeds, and grains which they like to stash in their nest. These rats may only live up to a year. It reaches sexual maturity in two to five months. One of the challenges that come with getting rid of roof rats is that they travel through gutters that might be installed on the side of the house. They can enter and exit freely when foraging  for food to keep them fed during the day. Because of this roof rats need a adapted strategy in contrast to the Norway Rat who can be expelled through conventional means. Just like the Norway Rats, the Roof Rat also has a unstoppable urge to gnaw on various things found in the attic to keep their teeth in check. This might have catastrophic consequences as they too can gnaw on exposed wiring which can result in a house fire. Usually when these unexplained event happen authorities eventually find out that rodents would be the culprit.

Rats are typically larger than mice. They weigh about 150 to 300g, and they measure about 40cm in length, while mice only measure 3 to 10cm in length and weigh around 12 to 45g. Mice have long tails that are covered in fur, and their bellies are usually covered with hair. In contrast with rats, that have much thicker tails with head and feet larger than the mouse. Mice are curious while rats tend to be more cautious and aggressive in nature. Roof rats prefer heights whereas mice prefer to stay low to the ground.

The Main Differences Between Rats And Mice

mouse and rat pest control markham

Rats are very cautious rodents that choose to avoid human contact whenever possible. Rats are more destructive, dominating, and are outdoor creatures. As opposed to the house mouse who likes to spend its time indoors and thrives. Mice are very curious rodents and will investigate anything new, especially when it is food, but will stay very cautious. Mice prefer to eat cereal, grains, nuts, and berries. They will look for materials such as shredded paper or cardboard around the house to make and build its nest with. Seeing shredded material scattered at random places is a clear indication you are dealing with some kind of rodent. Rats on the other hand are more aggressive and usually likely to stay in secluded areas to avoid detection. The rat looks very intimidating compared to the what feeble house mouse and is more likely yo fend off its predator when it feels cornered. That is why, when you see a rat, make sure to stay away from it. Mice are usually nocturnal and mostly active from dusk till dawn. They do not like bright lights and have very bad vision. Despite that their sense of smell is very strong as well as their hearing but will come out during the daytime to look for food. One clear indication of rat presence is droppings which are a more oblong shape and is much bigger in size than mice droppings which can usually be compared to chocolate sprinkles. Because rats prefer to stay outdoors, burrows can be sighted outside around the yard.

What Attracts Rats To Your Yard And Home

Just like with humans, rats require basic needs to survive and to live a comfortable life, and all these amenities can be found under one roof. Rats need shelter, water, and food. The issue is that our habitats are packed with food and water that can last the rat a lifetime and well beyond. It is why rats make an active effort to spawn generations of rats that can sooner or later cause the rats to look for shelter elsewhere in the house. Pet food, vegetation, and leaky pipes are all things that get rats to our front doors in the first place. Norway rats are notoriously known to dig burrows. Burrows are tunnel-like structures that are made up of several chambers. These chambers can house several rats that are divided into dominant and submissive rats that are the weaker rats. If you notice these rats out in the daylight, you probably saw the weaker rat since rats are nocturnal creatures that are active during the night. The weaker rat hunts and looks for food when the dominant rats are inactive, hence they come out during the day. The hunt for more food and water eventually leads them indoors where they can establish a small colony. They are incredibly fast breeders and will not take long before you take notice of their presence. To make matters even worse, is that rats are known to be carriers of several diseases such as salmonellosis, leptospirosissis, and tularemia and being the cause of the infamous plague, just to give you an idea what they have in store.

Rat Control Methods

There are various DIY options available on the market these days. These products can range from more traditional traps to more ‘high-tech’ such as glue traps and high-pitch sound systems. Most of these solutions, if not all, are just temporary solutions, and with temporary solutions they come with temporary relief. Rats are great at adapting to whatever situation they find themselves in, and this is what poses a challenge for average DIYer, rendering them useless. They are exceptionally good at hiding making this even a more challenging task than it already was. In addition, rats are incredibly fast breeders, and before you know it, you might be dealing with hundreds in a very short amount of time. Only a well seasoned licensed pest control expert can take care of the rat infestation at its core, and the investment is well worth it. Professionals use their expertise and their knowledge to find hidden entry-points all over the property. They use the right tools at their disposal to bring the rat population to zero. getting rids of the rats, however, is not enough. Preventive measures should be taken to ensure that it stays this way. Definitely. Chemicals should be handled by professionals. Not using them how they are supposed to be used can spell disaster. It can have fatal consequences if exposed to pets and small children. Rats also come with a host of diseases and that is not a risk to be taken lightly.

INSPECTION

EXTERMINATION

EXCLUSION

rodent exclusion

Inspection

To determine and find out where the rats enter and exit the property, we conduct a comprehensive exterior inspection. We look for holes, cracks, crevices, vents, and structural gaps around the perimeter of the premises. We then report our findings with photographic evidence and offer recommendations. This creates transparency and understanding between the property owner and the technician throughout the process.

Extermination

After the inspection, we will discuss our next step in the extermination process. Depending on the situation and need of the treatment, we will strategically place tamper-proof bait traps and rodenticide in and around the property to yield maximum results. Tamper-proof bait traps cannot be accessed by children and pets. Keys are needed for this that only the technician can open.

Exclusion

Once rat activity has ceased, our technician will then move on to the exclusion processes. This includes sealing up of entry-points. We look for holes, cracks, crevices, vents, and structural gaps and other points of entry that seem prone to intrusion and seal them with the help of galvanized steel mesh.

Why Professional Rat Control Service is Better Option

Truth to be told, people do not instantaneously think of hiring professional services as soon as they spot rats scurrying away. Instead, they go to their nearest hardware store and choose from the dizzying array of all kinds of repellants, traps, and gimmicks that promise to get rid of rats in no time. Traps are effective, yes. But knowing how to place them effectively and properly install them is what the majority of people who buy these products are not educated on, unfortunately. This often leads to a lot of frustration, disappointment, and monetary loss. Rats are incredibly fast breeders and this can be proven by the fact that you have probably seen multiple rats around your premises thinking it was one rat. Once rats have established a nest inside of your property, the problem will persist until you have literally rooted out the problem. Pest control does not revolve around the eradication of live rats but is about getting to the root of the problem and taking care of that. Rats are incredibly agile and intelligent creatures that always look to avoid detection and this is why you have in most cases heard a rat instead of actually seeing one. This is where technicians come in. They will actively comb out your property and take care of the nest only to take care of the rest so each and every rat is taken care of. Rat control technicians have years of experience dealing with similar cases around the region and have successfully helped businesses, individuals, and families retake their life from the rats. Rats can be impossible to deal with without the right tools, experience, and a detailed plan, and this is why we offer neighbors around and beyond the Markham area affordable pest control and proofing measures to take care of it all at once!
