Job Overview
Location: Markham, Ontario
Structure: Detached split level home with attached garage
Problem: Suspected squirrel activity in the attic during early morning hours
Service: Squirrel removal and full roofline exclusion
Visits: 2
Summary
We were contacted regarding ongoing wildlife activity in the attic consistent with squirrel behaviour. Our team completed a full exterior roof inspection, identified the primary entry point, and carried out humane squirrel removal using a one-way door system. Targeted exclusion work was completed to prevent re-entry, followed by a confirmation visit to verify resolution.
Background / Property Context
The property is a detached two-storey brick home with multiple rooflines, soffit intersections, and plastic roof and wall vents. These features can create vulnerable transition points where roof decking, soffit, and siding meet, particularly if gaps develop over time.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported early morning noises originating from the attic space, raising concerns about wildlife presence and potential damage to the roof structure or insulation.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial visit, our technician conducted a full exterior inspection of the roof and upper elevations. Activity was traced to a vulnerable soffit-to-roof intersection. Additional risk areas were noted at roof vents and a wall vent, which were accessible from the roof surface.
Cause Analysis
Squirrels commonly access attic spaces by exploiting construction seams at soffit and roof intersections or by enlarging gaps around vents. Elevated rooflines and nearby tree cover can increase access opportunities. Once inside, attics provide warmth and shelter, particularly during early morning hours.
Treatment / Removal
A humane, non-lethal squirrel removal process was implemented. A one-way door was installed over the identified roof entry point, allowing the animal to exit naturally while preventing re-entry. All work was completed by our trained technician in accordance with accepted wildlife control practices.
Exclusion & Repairs
As part of the exclusion work completed on the first visit:
- One squirrel one-way door was installed over a roof vent entry point
- One additional soffit intersection was sealed using galvanized steel mesh
- Two plastic roof vents were reinforced with galvanized steel vent cages
- One plastic wall vent was secured with a galvanized steel cage
Photographs show galvanized steel mesh and vent cages mechanically fastened over vents and soffit gaps, contoured to the roof surface to maintain airflow while blocking wildlife access.

Outcome & Confirmation
On the second visit, the homeowner reported no further wildlife activity. The one-way door was removed, the entry point was permanently sealed, and all exclusion areas were reinspected. No additional signs of squirrel activity were observed following completion of the work.

Technician Notes
Grant completed both visits, including the initial inspection, installation of the one-way door, and all exclusion measures. A final inspection confirmed the integrity of the repairs and the absence of ongoing wildlife activity.
